Cellars of Diocletian’s palace is called covered and partly underground space in the most southern part of Old Town (the former province of Diocletian’s Palace) in Split. It is a vaulted, bigger or smaller indoor rooms and corridors between them. Their large size as the entire eighth former Palace.

Shaped the construction of the Palace at the position with a fall towards the coast, for the purpose of equalization level of the southern, residential section, with other parts of the Palace. Their premises have a variety of forms: bazilikal, central, central – cross, rectangular, etc. The walls are used for the imperial foundations of residential buildings above them, and the forms of space probably coincide with the shape of these buildings that have disappeared design houses and streets of Split in the Middle Ages. Probably used for storage, perhaps prison space.

Through their environment, as part of the main kardina (Cardo Maximus) of Diocletian’s Palace, traversing through the hall of the St. Ploce. Dujam (Peristil) leads to the exit to the sea, so called. port aenea (Brass Gate), port door of a palace, and that they divided into eastern and western part. Along the southern side, with walls of the Palace, offers a wide hallway from which you access in certain areas basement.

Time were almost completely overwhelmed, but awareness of their existence in Split is permanently there (old Split name for them is “Grote”) and, god-fearing and godliness, they are the dungeons where the Emperor Diocletian torture Christians. However, some poduzetniji Split, which had the house above them, sometimes they probijali their vaults and reconstruct them in their own stock – basement rooms.

Their excavations began in the 19th century, and most had the momentum in the 50-team 20th years century and to this day are mostly found. The western part of the basement has been preserved in its entirety and is almost completely accessible touring. Their eastern part during the Middle Ages partly fallen down, but it is mostly now discovered and publicly accessible, although the above-mentioned reason, destroyed many valuable, medieval and later building circuits and streets of the town, together with an old monastery and church of Sv. Clare.

What would perhaps be considered a true value of the basement and making it unique Split in the world, is the fact that over their impressive, monumental space, almost a thousand and a half years of living tissue is the city, streets and houses of Split.
